Musings of a 2nd Time NOLA Mom: A dream baby shower

Written by  Heather E. Ferdinand
Editor’s Note: Over the past three years, I’ve (LaTesha Gonzales) shared my Musings of a First Time NOLA Mom. With a #NewIntheNOLAbaby in tow courtesy of our Director of Public Relations, Heather Ferdinand, heres her Musings of a 2nd Time NOLA Mom!

On October 16, 2017, I was the princess that I always wanted to be. Dressed in a flowing, magical gown with a crown of fall flowers adorning my head and surrounded by my closest family and friends, I celebrated the imminent arrival of my baby girl.

In stark contrast to my first pregnancy, which I detailed in Thank Goodness for Second Chances, this baby was being welcomed into a world of love and this baby shower promised to showcase just how much love she was going to be welcomed with.

For the shower, we headed to Café Reconcile (1631 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd.), a program that provides life skills and job training to at-risk New Orleans youth, in their Emeril Lagasse Foundation Room. Located on the second floor via a beautiful spiral staircase with its brick backdrop and tall windows throughout, the Foundation Room was perfect for the magical, whimsical, charming, sophisticated, and inviting baby shower that I had planned.

And what a dream the shower was! While my family and friends were able to enjoy each other’s company, it was also wonderful to be in support of the Café Reconcile program as the students made sure everything was perfect for the event, including the layout of the room and buffet of food cooked by them.

In addition to the stunning venue, harpist Cassandra Watson set the mood with classical pieces of music while the attendees donned flower crowns and fascinators, played games, decorated onesies, and created birth affirmations for my birthing room with Audie J. Photography there to capture all of the moments. We were even treated to a second line on Oretha Castle Haley as we celebrated another life coming into this world!

To say that I was happy is an understatement. To have all of my important family and friends there to surround me with love in a beautiful space was amazing. I thank the Universe for it all!

Special thanks to Kelder Summers and Tori Nero at Café Reconcile, Malana Mitchell, and Audie Jackson of Audie J. Photography for making all of my dreams come true!
