Local Mother’s Day gifts: ‘Kismet Cosmetics,’ body bronzing lotion, vegan lipsticks, and liquid illuminators

Even though it’s Jazz Fest season in New Orleans, we can’t forget about an uber-important holiday coming up in a few weeks, where we’re gonna be celebrating all the NOLA mamas! Caitlin Picou of Kismet Cosmetics

A native of the Northshore, Caitlin Picou is a firm believer in destiny or fate, also know as kismet. And not only is kismet a mantra she lives by, it’s also the name of her local company, Kismet Cosmetics, a USA made, paraben-free, and cruelty-free line of body bronzing lotions, lipsticks, and face and body illuminators. 
 
Now, when people think of fashion, they tend to think of the clothing, shoes, and accessories that a person is wearing as opposed to one’s cosmetics. But Caitlin is here to let us know that “fashion is more than just the clothes you wear. It is the right hairstyle. It is the right shade of lipstick. It is the highlighting of your skin. Kismet is the perfect accessory to that LBD (little black dress) or LWD (little white dress) you just purchased.”
 
As a teenager (and perhaps a difficult one :), Caitlin was no stranger to fashion. “I could NEVER find exactly what I envisioned in my mind when it came to my wardrobe,” she said. “When I was in high school, we had Dillard’s and maybe one boutique, and that was it! So I was picky and I drove my mom crazy to say the least. But I wasn’t fashion-forward by any means; I just always put a lot of thought into my outfits. I was also obsessed with beauty. The first computer game I had was one where you took a photo of yourself and tried different hairstyle looks and makeup on. So I was constantly in tune, or at least I thought I was, with the fashion and beauty world. But never in a million years would I have dreamed of owning my own beauty brand!”
 
And that’s where that kismet comes in! After working in the oil and gas industry in Fort Worth, TX, Caitlin found herself without a job, but her path was moved in a completely different direction. “I am 100% a believer in fate,” Caitlin smiled. “While it seems like we have control over our lives, we really don’t. We are guided towards certain aspects in life and taken away just as quickly. Before I began Kismet Cosmetics, I had gotten laid off from my very first job in the oil and gas industry in Fort Worth, TX. However, if I hadn’t gotten that job, I wouldn’t have landed a job at hair care company TIGI and TIGI is where I found out what I wanted to do with my life. I worked my way up through the company, launching product after product and eventually, I was moved to New York City to work on the Suave Professionals Brand Development Team. Living in New York City really shaped my style. It’s where I 
noticed that beauty and fashion go hand-in-hand. I found my ‘style’ while living there, and I wanted to create on-trend products that would enhance your style. So when I can back home, that’s when I began working on Kismet.”
 
She continued, “If you would have told me back in college that I would be a Licensed Makeup Artist with my own beauty brand all before the age of 30, I would have never believed you. But slowly, piece by-piece, my life was formed. And here I am!” 

Caitlin officially launched Kismet Cosmetics in July 2013 with the Opulent Body Bronzing Lotion followed by the Velvet Collection of Semi-Matte Lipsticks (available in 10 colors), the Succulent Collection of Liquid Lipsticks (available in 6 shades), and most recently, the Lovely Collection of Liquid Illuminators
 
“All of our products are made in the US and are paraben and cruelty-free,” Caitlin explained. “In addition, the Opulent Body Bronzing Lotion doesn’t contain DHA, a chemical that reacts with your skin and releases a less-than-pleasant odor.”
 
She added, “Kismet is a brand that focuses on fashion trends. For example, this spring, peachy lip colors are in, so Just Peachy was launched on March 1. Once the peachy trend is out, we will discontinue that shade. You will never be choosing from 50 different reds in our line. You know you will always be keeping with the trends with any of our products.” 

Caitlin and Kismet Cosmetics are also focused on giving back to the community. “Giving back is a cornerstone of our brand,” she said. “I strongly believe that as a business, we have a responsibility to help out the local community. Kismet gives back whenever we can. Our recent partnership is with the Lauren Savoy Olinde (LSO) Foundation, which helps raise awareness and prevention of skin cancer. Ten percent of all proceeds from Opulent are donated to the foundation, along with many other partnership programs. I hope to increase our ability to give back as we continue to grow!”
