NOMA’s ‘LOVE in the Garden’ features the ‘LOVE Cocktail Challenge’ with local craft bartenders, September 25

Written by  IntheNOLA.com
The New Orleans Museum of Art’s (NOMA) upcoming annual fundraiser, LOVE in the Garden, will be celebrating not only the visual and culinary arts this Friday, but also the art of cocktails with the LOVE Cocktail Challenge, featuring celebrated craft bartenders in pursuit of their most creative interpretations of LOVE!

With creations by Abigail Diedre Gullo of Compere Lapin, Paul Gustings of Broussard’s, Chris Hannah of French 75, Chris McMillian of Kingfish, T. Cole Newton of Twelve Mile Limit, Kimberly Patton-Bragg of Three Muses, Daniel Victory of Victory, and Steve Yamada of Latitude 29, you’ll be sipping on LOVE all night long!
In preparation for all that liquid love, a few of the challengers gave us a sneak peek into what their creations will be. Here’s what they had to say:

Kimberly Patton-Bragg of Three Muses
ITN: When you hear the word love, what’s the first thing to come to your mind?
Patton-Bragg: “No sweat, Warchief.” It’s a quote from the movie The Warriors. That was the bonding moment when my husband and I met 20 years ago.

ITN: You’re challenged with creating a cocktail inspired by a “variation of love.” What’s yours?
Patton-Bragg: I created the “Inside Voice” using gin, ginger liqueur, lychee, lemon, and cardamom tea. I wanted something exotic and sexy.

ITN: What do you love about New Orleans?
Patton-Bragg: The fact that it embraces the unique, celebrates eccentricity, and protects beauty.

Daniel Victory of Victory Bar (Winner of last year’s challenge)
ITN: When you hear the word love, what’s the first thing to come to your mind?
Victory: Love...something deeply desired that you can’t live without.

ITN: You’re challenged with creating a cocktail inspired by a “variation of love.” What’s yours?
Victoy: It’s a surprise for the event, but here’s a hint: You leave feeling more love than hate, but remember...hate is a passion that is of equal interest to love.

ITN: What do you love about New Orleans?
Victory: There is so much to love about this city: the sights, the sounds, the smells, the touch. She has a way of stirring your soul and igniting our imaginations. She is strong while she bends, and she creeps into the veins of our being...releasing love and sometimes hate. You see, that is the love affair we have with New Orleans. She is everything.

T. Cole Newton of Twelve Mile Limit
ITN: When you hear the word love, what’s the first thing to come to your mind?
Newton: Passion, commitment, and sincerity.

ITN: You’re challenged with creating a cocktail inspired by a “variation of love.” What’s yours?
Newton: My variation of love is “lust,” and let’s just say that I find new inspiration for it every day. The base spirit is Bourbon, but I don't want to reveal too much.

ITN: What do you love about New Orleans?
Newton: I love that every adult that lives in New Orleans has made a conscious decision to do so. I love how often we party in the streets. I love how free and open it is.

Chris Hannah of French 75
ITN: When you hear the word love, what’s the first thing to come to your mind?
Hannah: When I hear the word love, I relate it to my immediate family and bartending community. And a ring of fire when it comes to relationships ;).

ITN: You’re challenged with creating a cocktail inspired by a “variation of love.” What’s yours?
Hannah: I was drawn to love/hate and Alberto Vargas (noted Peruvian painter of pin-up girls) inspired me with my cocktail I’ve named “The Vargas Girl.” While I love the Vargas Girls he drew, I hate the thought those sexy women won’t leave their canvas to give me the time of day. I tried to make the feel of the cocktail live up to the voluptuous beauty that is the Vargas Girl and I believe I came close.

ITN: What do you love about New Orleans?
Hannah: Brass Bands in the streets, biking and driving underneath our elegant oak trees, dressing like Louis Armstrong and Danny Barker, and all the wooden houses in our beautiful neighborhoods.

You can sip all of these LOVE cocktails and more this Friday at LOVE in the Garden!
