First time NOLA daddies celebrate Father’s Day: Jeff Gonzales of IntheNOLA.com

Written by  IntheNOLA.com
Father’s Day is quickly approaching (that’s right, this Sunday, June 15!). And to celebrate such a special day, we’re featuring a different first time NOLA daddy each day this week!

Jeff and Gabriel Pierre Gonzales, 8 months

As the founder (aka ‘our fearless leader’) of IntheNOLA.com, Jeff welcomed Gabriel Pierre Gonzales on September 22, 2013.

“The most exciting thing about being a father is watching Gabriel discover the world for the first time,” he said. “Watching him discover that he has hands and feet, taking those first crawls, trying to make those first sounds with his vocal chords, those are the really beautiful things to see.”
On the other end of the excitement is a little bit of fear. “For me, the scariest part about being a father is definitely not being in control one hundred percent of the time for his well-being. It's hard for me to relinquish that control when it's out of my hands. I find myself being a little bit more resistant about accepting that he's OK with somebody else besides me there and I don't really know what's happening, or what he’s experiencing.”

When it comes to New Orleans, this city is its own huge classroom with tons of things for our little ones to learn and Jeff is certainly excited to teach him all about them. “I'm definitely looking forward to teaching Gabriel about all the beauty and great things that we have here: the culture, the dialect, the food, the festivals and everything else that we are so privileged to have. I can't wait to share all that with him. At the same time, New Orleanians share a bond with each other; the humility of the people down here and the sense of community are unlike anywhere else and that's a great thing to have to be able to share with your son.”

For those of you looking to or about to take the plunge into fatherhood, Jeff said, “The universe provides abundantly for all its children, so if you have the want to be a father, there’s no time like the present. Obviously, you wanna make sure that you have certain things in order, like being prepared as much as possible for the financial expense and researching what to expect from pregnancy on up. But the biggest advice I can give is to just go for it! It's a beautiful thing! I never realized that I could love something as much as I do Gabriel. I'm thankful for him every day and I'm elated to have the opportunity to be able to teach, nurture, and guide him, to instill morals and virtues, and to be there for him, protect him, listen to him, and watch him grow. All those things excite me! The opportunity to assist someone else's journey in life, I think, is a beautiful thing.

Jeff concluded, “Whether you have a son or daughter, they are to be cherished.  As a father, we have an extremely important role to play in the development of the next generation and that's going to determine the path that society takes in the future. So do your best to be patient, make good choices, and understand always that these little ones are our lifelines. They are our legacies, so make sure that yours is a great one.”
