Musings of a First Time NOLA Mom: There’s no turning back now!

Written by  LaTesha Charbonnet Gonzales
It feels funny to be writing a column about myself. I’m used to telling the stories of all our great New Orleanians and now, I’m gonna be telling mine as well. See, there’s something growing in my belly…in other words, my husband, IntheNOLA.com founder, Jeff Gonzales, and I are having a little NOLA baby in October. Yep, we’re some excited…and some nervous, too!

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is LaTesha and I am the editor of IntheNOLA.com. All those great stories you read about our awesome New Orleanians…yeah, that’s me. And my best friend and colleague, Heather Ferdinand has “encouraged” me (for lack of a better word) to share my own story with you guys.
NOLA.com writer Keith Spera was a big inspiration for me in writing Musings of a First Time NOLA Mom as I love his blog, The Paternity Test, about the ups and downs of raising children in New Orleans. Witty and honest, I look forward to my husband experiencing some of the same things Mr. Spera has (Check out one of my favorites, The Paternity Test: The advantages of incompetency).

For a little background, Jeff and I have been together since high school…the talent shows at St. Aug., the jamborees at Tad Gormley, the dances at Gernon Brown, the Sweet Sixteens at the Doubletree. Fourteen years together without killing each other and our first baby coming in October. Jeff’s way in love with the little stinker already…let’s just say that I’m getting there :).

With Musings of a First Time NOLA Mom, expect some raw honesty. I am NOT your typical pregnant woman, or maybe I am and most women just don’t express their true feelings cuz they feel like they’re supposed be enjoying this great miracle that’s taking over their body.

Well, I’m certainly not enjoying it that much. It’s hot as hell, my stomach’s stretching to amazing proportions, I can’t/won’t eat things I used to love, and my ultimate favorite, he’s got to come out of there one way or another (the reality of that truthfully makes me shudder)!

So, as I make way through these last few months with Baby G. (the only thing Jeff and I can agree on calling him at this moment), I invite you to come along for the ride. Share your stories, agree/disagree with me, give advice, get a good laugh (or maybe a tear sometimes) on this wild ride of pregnancy IntheNOLA-style!
