‘Start the Adventure in Reading’ improves reading skills and self-esteem of New Orleans students

Written by  IntheNOLA.com
Non-profit organization, STAIR (Start the Adventure in Reading), is holding their annual event cocktail fundraiser, a STAIR Affair 2012: Black and White and Read All Over, this Thursday, November 8 from 7:00pm-9:30pm at the home of Sidney and Norwood Thornton.

Founded in 1985, STAIR “provides reading tutors for public school second grade students.”
“STAIR is an incredible organization that helps kids learn to read – and to love doing it – all at no cost to the students, families or schools,” explained board member, Jonnie Honse. “It addresses a fundamental issue that I think we can all be concerned with, childhood literacy. STAIR was the first organization that I volunteered with when I first moved to New Orleans as a reading tutor at Pierre A. Capdau Charter School, and it has had my heart ever since."

STAIR Affair 2012 will feature food, drinks, live entertainment, and a silent auction to support STAIR’s mission of “improving reading skills and self-esteem of lower elementary school students in New Orleans.”

Jonnie added, “STAIR Affair directly benefits the children we work with. The money raised from STAIR Affair will provide, books, dictionaries, school supplies and snacks for the STAIR students as well as trained site directors for each STAIR tutoring site.

STAIR Affair promises to be a great party! “We're very excited to have Honorary Chairs, First Lady Cheryl Landrieu and Ruby Bridges this year,” said Jonnie. “They have a great passion for childhood literacy. We'll have food from Crabby Jack's and Jacque-Imos Café, auction items which include staycations at local hotels, a fabulous antique table from Karla Katz Antiques, jewelry from Mignon Faget, and much more. We can’t wait to see you there!”
