Louisiana SPCA hosts first annual ‘Brunch Fest’ at New Orleans City Park, April 3

Written by  IntheNOLA.com
The Louisiana SPCA, an organization that is very near and dear to our hearts, is having their 1st annual Brunch Fest to raise money for our four-legged, furry friends!

Now, you know New Orleanians know how to brunch, so dress in your most festive brunch attire or costume and enjoy brunch-inspired restaurants, breakfast style cocktails, beer and wine, see LA/SPCA adoptables, shop unique fest vendors, and much more! Favorites such as The Ruby Slipper Café, The Bulldog, Superior Grill, Wakin’ Bakin’, among others, will be there making sure you’re eatin’ and drinkin’ right all day!

And it wouldn’t be brunch without a Bloody Mary! Lucky us that there will be an entire contest dedicated to creating the perfect Bloody Mary. And YOU can participate…just sign up as an amateur or professional and show everybody what you got!
Crossroads at the House of Blues gave us a sneak peek of what they’ll be offering at Brunch Fest. “We’ll be serving our signature chicken and waffles with Vermont maple syrup and fresh sliced strawberries all topped with homemade whipped cream,” said Ashley Sutton of Live Nation.

She added, “Many of our House of Blues employees are actually rescue parents. It's important for our company to align itself with organizations that are important to our team members. The Louisiana SPCA is just one of the many rescue organizations in New Orleans that our venue supports and we are thrilled to continue to grow that support by participating in more fundraisers like Brunch Fest!”

And your furry family members are welcome at the House of Blues’ Voodoo Garden. “Our Voodoo Garden is a covered courtyard and the ideal spot for pups and their owners who are interested in delicious food, drinks, and live LOCAL music!” Ashley explained. “Once a month, the House of Blues partners with a local rescue organization to host All Dogs Go to Happy Hour, a dog friendly happy hour and fundraiser complete with live music, bar bites, and drink specials for visitors and their four-legged friends!”

With emcees Chriss Knight and Andrew Ward, live music from The Messy Cookers Jazz Band, Shades of Praise Gospel Choir, and Kinfolk Brass Band, there’s no doubt that there’s gonna be plenty of eatin’, drinkin’, dancin’, and lovin’ on NOLA’s furry friends and family!

In support of Brunch Fest, IntheNOLA got together with some of our favorite New Orleanians to showcase their beloved pets in addition to showing off some pet-friendly spots in the city:

Varion Laurent and Beignet (3 years old) at The Bulldog, Mid City
On Beignet: “Beignet begs for food more politely than any dog I’ve ever owned. She simply places her big heavy head on your kneecap and looks at you with puppy eyes. If she senses you are ignoring her, she simply presses her chin down a bit firmer on your knee. She is also one of the smartest dogs I've ever owned. She was sitting on command at 8 weeks old.”

On Brunch Fest: “I’m definitely looking forward to Brunch Fest: the food, the Bloody Mary contest, and The Kinfolks Brass Band.”

Tracee Dundas and Frenchie (8 months old) at Crossroads at the House of Blues New Orleans
On Frenchie: “Frenchie’s still a pup and has only been part of the family for 2 months, so we’re still learning about each other, but he’s mastered sit, lay, and stay, and he has his own version of a rollover, which is to run around in a circle…a work in progress!”

On Brunch Fest: “Who doesn’t love mimosas and dressing for the occasion?! And most of all, I love supporting the Louisiana SPCA!”

Reagan & Jeff Charleston and Reina Tucker with Puff (8 years old), Bijou (5 years old), and Beignet (4 years old) at Crossroads at the House of Blues New Orleans
On Puff, Bijou, and Beignet: “Our dogs bring us so much happiness. The Pomeranians are total hams -- they love dressing up and getting pampered. Our Chihuahua mix is a cuddler and loves sweet treats. There’s no greater feeling than adopting an animal. They are so grateful for love and affection. We adore them so much and they bring so much fun and joy into our lives! Everyone needs a rescue pup (or four)!”

On Brunch Fest: “We can't wait for Brunch Fest! Every event the Louisiana SPCA puts on is always a blast, but they are really onto something with brunch! One of our favorite things is a Sunday morning brunch in NOLA, but a brunch complete with our pups, music, and all of our favorite fellow animal lovers for a good cause...you can’t beat that!”

Fresh Johnson and Cinnamon (7 years old) at Crossroads at the House of Blues New Orleans
On Cinnamon: Cinnamon was a stray that got picked up by the Louisiana SPCA and she turned out to be the most perfect pup ever. My grandmother had been asking for a puppy because she knew I fostered from time to time. I promised her that when I found the right one, I’d keep her. Trying to surprise her, I asked my grandfather if I could get her a puppy and he gave me a stern no. He was ill and probably just knew it would be a hassle. A while later, he passed away and out of the blue, I found out about Cinnamon. Her foster mom at the time needed to make room for a dog she adopted, so Cinnamon needed a new foster home. We met at Panera Bread and the rest is history. I regret not having a camera to catch my grandmother’s reaction when I walked in with her! They have been best buddies ever since! Sometimes, it’s hard to determine whether we saved Cinnamon or she saved us.”

On Brunch Fest: “I’m looking most forward to seeing all of the pups! They’re my weakness!”

Ally Burguieres and Coco (6 years old) at Crossroads at the House of Blues New Orleans
On Coco: “Coco’s vegan! He loves Nature’s Balance Vegan Formula, which is the same price as traditional dog food and conveniently available at all the big name pet stores! He loves the taste and I’m happy knowing it’s cruelty-free and doesn’t support animal agriculture -- which treats animals like food and devastates the environment.”

On Brunch Fest: I’m looking forward to some vegan goodies! I’ll be happy to seek out some plant-based food and drinks.”

Chriss Knight at The Ruby Slipper Café
On her pets: “I have two cats, Chloe and Cue, and a guinea pig named Penelope. Chloe is 14 years young, Cue is 11 years young, and Penelope is 2 years old. Cue and Penelope are best friends! Sometimes I catch them taking naps together in the sunroom and it’s so sweet. It goes to show you that if a cat and guinea pig can get along, us humans have no excuse! Chloe is the matriarch of my animal crew...she is always sitting in the shadows, but she knows everything that is going on around her. When she meows, everyone listens! They are all so special in their own little ways!”

On Brunch Fest: “I’m looking forward to the food, the drinks, the music, and the fun all for the animals of the Louisiana SPCA! I hold this organization dear to my heart because of all the wonderful things they do for our sweet animals in need. I’m excited and proud to serve as emcee for Brunch Fest and can’t wait to see everyone at City Park!”

Thanks to all the models (human and non-human!), the House of Blues New Orleans, The Ruby Slipper Cafe, and The Bulldog, Mid City. And a very special thanks to Heather Ferdinand for coordinating it all and Jeff Gonzales for the beautiful photos!
