Local fashion designers stepping out at ‘New Orleans Fashion Week,’ March 13-19

Written by
Food, check. Music, double check. People, plenty. Culture, please! Fashion…hmmmm fashion? Yes, New Orleans, do not sleep on the fashion!
For the sixth year, New Orleans is playing host to its own fashion week. That’s right, move on over New York and Paris and let New Orleans Fashion Week (NOFW) commence!
New Orleans Fashion Week is a series of high-end runway shows, presentations, pop-up boutiques, networking opportunities, and social experiences to showcase the talents and collections of the southern region’s established and emerging fashion designers and retailers,” explained NOFW founder, Tracee Dundas. “The five-day fashion celebration includes all genres of fashion presented with style, imagination and flair.”

NOFW aims to showcase as many up and coming local designers as possible, providing a platform for them to get their name and designs into the community. “We recognize that there is a significant number of emerging designers in the southern region that are not getting the exposure they deserve,” said Tracee. “The exposure they receive at NOFW can be priceless in helping kick-start an emerging designer’s career. NOFW has also been instrumental as a springboard for careers in fashion, including that of models, makeup artists, and hair stylists and allows us to bring a new level of creative consciousness to the regional industry.”
In addition to the more than fifty runway shows featured during the week, NOFW also holds a Top Design Competition (TDC) “that shines the spotlight on a new generation of emerging designers in an exciting fashion competition with a highly coveted prize package. It gives these talented individuals a platform to showcase their collection in front of an audience of buyers, media, and fashion professionals.” (Be on the lookout for a feature on 2015 winner, Kristine Pichon!)

"I especially love stalking out new designers," Tracee added. "I’ve discovered many amazing hidden gems throughout the region that for most, showing at NOFW was their first professional runway presentation.”
New Orleans Fashion Week starts off the week with a Children's Runway Day at the Riverwalk and Kickoff Party at The Saint Hotel (921 Canal St.) on Sunday, March 13, followed by runway shows at the New Orleans Board of Trade (316 Magazine St.) from March 17-19. Other events include: a Roundtable Luncheon at the Bourbon House (133 Bourbon St.); “Model Walk-Off, a competition for the runway models that will advance the careers of two promising models with a scouting trip to Los Angeles compliments of John Robert Powers New Orleans; Fashion Career Day, “a special day that offers university level fashion students a look into today’s fashion careers from industry professionals”; and the Style Lounge, which "unites and inspires the fashion community by providing a marketplace for shoppers to discover new boutiques and revisit favorites."
Tracee concluded, “It’s been amazing to watch the fashion industry grow not only in New Orleans, but throughout the Gulf Coast region. I never imagined this would be the start of a southern fashion movement that has united a fragmented fashion community to create a strong regional platform, amplifying the voices of everyone in the our fashion industry. I often say that it is a labor of LOVE because I seem to live and breathe ‘it’ 24/7! I love it all!”
