Son of a Saint and Pinkberry host 2nd annual ‘Amazing Challenge,’ Saturday, March 29

Written by  IntheNOLA.com
Next Saturday, New Orleans will be transformed into an obstacle course that only the bravest and most intelligent New Orleanians will be able to conquer.

It’s a challenge. But not just any challenge. It's an Amazing Challenge, traversing through the streets of metro New Orleans. Hosted by local nonprofit Son of a Saint and open to boys and girls (8-14 years old), the Amazing Challenge is a “challenging and educational competition highlighting the Son of a Saint mission of enhancing the lives of young males and promoting mentorship.”

In its second year, the Amazing Challenge continues to grow with “over 12 different challenges and activities involving mentorship, education and sports.” “Any activity that brings kids and mentors parents together is building community, personal empowerment, and city and team pride,” said Bivian “Sonny” Lee, III, founder and chairman of Son of Saint. “We love thinking outside of the box for activities for kids and adults to interact, work as a unit, and learn how to achieve a common goal. Kids get to showcase their intellect and mental fitness, physical fitness, and creativity, and adults get to support and cultivate their expression and help support the kids growth.”

Each team will consist of one boy or girl with one adult (over the age of 21) for the 5-mile challenge starting at Pinkberry on Canal St. and ending at Pinkberry on Magazine St. “Each task will take place at various businesses or public facilities along the route, including Pinkberry, Fulton Alley, World War II Museum, the New Orleans Public Library, New Orleans Fire Department Engine 1, New Orleans Police Department District 2 Station, LuluLemon, Chet Pourciau Design, and Games 2 U.”

“The challenges are created by Brandon MacNeil's two TIDES (Tulane InterDisciplinary Experience Seminars) classes at Tulane University,” explained Lon Nichols, Director of Operations at Pinkberry. “The freshmen work in groups to develop the tasks at each challenge location. The challenges require the adult and child to work as a team. There are physical challenges, like the mentor guiding the child to make a blindfolded basket at the 2nd District basketball courts or teaming up for yoga posses at Life Yoga. The educational tasks include a scavenger hunt at the World War II Museum and an interior design challenge at Chet Pourciau Design.”

Up for grabs are some amazing prices, including a trip to Orlando, FL and a Pinkberry frozen yogurt party with a New Orleans Saints player.

So, do you know any young New Orleanians who have what it takes to do the Amazing Challenge?! Sign them up for a great day of partnership, encouragement, and mentorship as they traverse their way through the challenge and life!
